Fabrics - Environmental Choices

PrairieWilds Philosophy

We've worked hard to source and supply organic, natural and sustainable fabrics for our clothing because it is important to our family and we think it is important to you as well.  Organic and sustainable fabrics are key to ensuring effective growth cycles for our farmers, sustainable jobs for farm workers, mill producers and print house workers around the world.  Oeko-Tex and GOTS certification also allows us to know the people making our fabrics are ensured living wages, proper environmental controls in the factories they work and ethical business practices with our partners.

Our Fabric Choices - what we source

Lyocell – Eco friendly, natural, man made fibre

Lyocell is a type of rayon cellulose fiber made from wood pulp generated from managed Eucalyptus groves in Austria, Australia, America and China.  Low toxicity solvents are used (and recycled to be used again) to convert wood pulp into fiber.

Lyocell fabrics represents a milestone in the creation of environmentally sustainable textiles as it is the only fully closed loop cellulose fibre on the market. With attributes such as good yarn tenacity and a soft smooth touch, Lyocell is very gentle on the skin. It is also Thermal regulating, naturally anti bacterial and biodegradable.

Bamboo – sustainable, regenerative, biodegradable

Bamboo fabric is a natural textile made from the pulp of bamboo grass. The Bamboo used to produce fabrics is easily replenished and requires no pesticides to grow. Did you know that there are over 1000 different species of Bamboo?  Bamboo is considered one of the most sustainable plants because it grows quickly and does not require chemicals or irrigation, and biodegrades more quickly than other fabrics.

Bamboo helps protect the planet’s resources, with a life-cycle of only two years, it doesn’t require fertilizer or pesticides to grow quickly and strongly. The bamboo used in clothing is produced in an eco-friendly closed-loop process with Oeko-Tex 100 certification or higher.  After processing, the bamboo fiber does not contain any harmful chemicals (as per the Okeo-Tex 100 standard).  Bamboo clothing offers a luxuriously soft fabric that is naturally hypoallergenic, moisture-absorbent and dries fast.

Organic Cotton (GOTS Certified)

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.

Starting from untreated, natural seeds, organic cotton is grown without synthetic fertilizers. Organic cotton crop rotation and composting maintain the health of naturally moist soil by creating a biodiverse, balanced ecosystem.  As a result, organic cotton plants are more resistant to pests and disease and therefore eliminating the need for the use pesticides which are often suspected to be carcinogenic or neurotoxic.

As a result of the cleaner growing process, farm workers are afforded a healthier work environment and the resulting uncontaminated plant waste can be used for other purposes - feed for livestock, oil production, etc.
